This past summer, there was one trend that no designer or high-street store has been able to ignore. Of course, I’m talking about gingham, the once-twee print that is even more 2017 than Big Little Lies and that BBC interview with professor Robert Kelly. I might have approximately three gingham dresses saved in various online shopping baskets; however, we fashion editors are always thinking six months ahead. The one trend that might topple gingham from being the biggest trend of the year is a colour that was all over the A/W 17 runways—red. In September, gingham will be replaced by all-red outfits, as everybody from Victoria Beckham to Max Mara is championing red-to-toe styling (like what we did there?).

Red is already spiking in popularity—according to Pinterest, since January, this colour has had a staggering 500% increase. Another major clue that this trend is going to be all over Zara in no time is the long list of celebrities who are already wearing red on red on red.

Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid have all already signed up for the dress-like-a-tomato movement—Bella took it so seriously she even wore red-tinted sunglasses too. Victoria Beckham, ever the professional brand ambassador, has been wearing her A/W 17 red full looks, mixing a burgundy jumper, boots and bag with a cherry-red skirt.

This isn’t just a brash trend for the Hadids and Jenners of this world—if you’re a little scared of making such a bold colour statement, then look to Emma Watson, who proves it can be a classic look, too. For press interviews earlier this year, Emma wore a red off-the-shoulder bodysuit tucked into matching flared trousers by independent designer Gabriela Hearst. You might think it’s an intimidating colour, however, a colour expert revealed to us that primary red is the most flattering colour for all skin tones.
