Samantha Silver and Gemma Rose Breger are industry experts who have been using their extensive fashion and beauty knowledge to create one of the most engaging mum-focused websites out there: This Is Mothership gives stylish but realistic advice on every imaginable topic. Here, Silver and Breger tell us which pieces no pregnant woman should have to do without, while still hanging on to her sense of style.

As we approach the seven month mark in our pregnancies we wanted to share key items that have worked well in our wardrobes since the start. These are items that are worth splashing out on as they will help you to create a maternity wardrobe that will last you the entire nine months, plus each of the key pieces will see you beyond your pregnancy. As we get further along the journey towards our new babies we’ve realised that comfort is key, but this doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice your style in anyway (phew).

Style Notes: Stick with your usual size as this is an item that you will never need to button up. Worn open, it will pull your outfit together without involving any effort. Scrunch up your sleeves to relax the look. Make sure the shoulder seam sits exactly on your shoulder–if it hangs down it will make you look broad, and if it’s too narrow it will make you look hunched.
Style Notes: Out of everything in your wardrobe that’s worth splashing out on, this is the one that will give you best cost per use. A real leather designer bag can last you forever (and you can then pass it on to your kids!) so it really is worth the money.  Depending on the amount of essentials you need (keys, phone, lipstick, credit cards…) these small across body bags should fit them all. If you need any extras for your day then nab yourself a stylish backpack and wear both. Keep the essentials within easy, hands free, reach of the across body bag.
Style Notes: Well-fitting denim is so important in making you feel and look good. You don’t want to be tugging at the waist every five minutes so work out what works best over your belly. Gemma sticks to an under bump denim and Sam prefers an over bump denim. During pregnancy, a skinny leg is best as it will keep your body in proportion with your growing stomach. A looser leg will make you look more oversized, and that isn’t the best feeling when pregnant.
Style Notes: As we said above, comfort is key and it’s lucky that there are so many brilliant flat shoes out there at the moment. If you are nearing the end of your pregnancy and need ease then go for a slip on style, like the Gucci loafers. As the weather turns colder a good chunky boot will be really useful, especially once the new born arrives and you will be out walking with a pram throughout winter.
Style Notes: A key item in any autumn/winter wardrobe but even more so for you if you are pregnant throughout winter. Oversized is key as you can just throw it on (with your skinny jeans and loafers) and look super stylish. Alternatively opt for a jumper dress with tights and boots. Wear with a Body Bump to smooth out any lumps and bumps.
